Fuel Efficiency Tips to Save You Money!

With the cost of gas in BC expected to continue to rise, conserving gas and driving a vehicle that is economical is important. There are a few ways to do this as well as ways to care for your Volkswagen that will aid you in this.

Drive Smoothly
Although tempting to speed and fun to use the power your engine has whether it is a Volkswagen or other, try not to accelerate too quickly, brake abruptly or speed. This can lower your fuel economy by 5% around town and over 33% on the highway.

Keep Filters Clean
Your engine needs clean air too. Replacing your dirty air filter with a clean one can improve your acceleration time by about 6-11%. Don’t forget to do this, air filters are often overlooked but are an important thing to maintain on your vehicle.

Proper Tire Pressure
Keep an eye on your fire pressure especially when there is a change in temperature/season. Make sure your tires aren’t over or under-inflated. This can improve your fuel economy by about 3.3%

Use VW Approved Oil
It might seem like it doesn’t matter what type of oil you use if you own a Volkswagen, following the VW oil recommendation can improve your fuel economy by 1-2%

Cruise Control
Maintain a constant speed on major roads and in free-flowing traffic. Use your cruise control when you are commuting or on a lengthy road trip, this will improve your fuel economy.

Avoid Idling
Don’t waste fuel, you get 0 kilometres per litre when you idle. Try a Volkswagen with an auto start/stop engine. When you are stopped at a red light or stuck in traffic, your car will turn off to save you money on fuel.

Doing the above things on a regular basis will translate in some big savings for you in fuel costs over the course of a year and over the lifetime of your vehicle. Try to make note of your driving habits and change the ones that are fuel guzzlers. If you are looking to save even more on gas, give us a call at Abbotsford Volkswagen and will help you find the vehicle to do that for you!
