A Fully Redesigned Three-Row SUV Coming to Abbotsford
Volkswagen has unveiled the second-generation Atlas, and Abbotsford Volkswagen will receive the new model as part of its Canadian arrival later this fall. The 2027 Atlas was introduced on March 31, 2026 ahead of the New York International Auto Show, where Volkswagen Canada showed off updated styling, a redesigned cabin, and a longer list of standard family-friendly features. For drivers across Abbotsford and the broader Fraser Valley, the Atlas remains the brand's most spacious offering -- a three-row SUV built with families and longer trips in mind. The redesign keeps the platform's hallmark third-row room intact while pushing material quality, technology, and safety equipment higher across the board. Volkswagen has confirmed that final Canadian specifications and pricing will be released closer to the launch this fall.
The 2027 Atlas adopts a more deliberate, premium appearance up front, with double-stacked LED headlights, a masked upper grille, and a strong hood that gives the SUV a planted look. Every trim except the base receives double lightlines and an illuminated VW badge, making the front end recognizable at any time of day. Standard dynamic turn signals add three different animation patterns, a small detail that becomes apparent each time the indicators are used during a downtown Abbotsford commute.
In side view, the proportions feel cleaner thanks to a redesigned theme line, sculpted side sills, and stronger fenders. Wheel choices begin at 18 inches and run up to 21 inches, with both machined alloy and gloss black finishes available. The rear gets a more pronounced spoiler and a tailgate that now sits flush with the bumper for a smoother shape. A cross-body taillight design echoes the front lighting, while available illuminated door handles and puddle lamps with a unique projection pattern add character. Three additions to the colour palette this year -- Blackberry, Boreal Green, and Ascot Grey -- give buyers fresh choices.
The cabin has been completely rebuilt around a wraparound architectural loop that flows through the dashboard and into the front door panels. Every vent, display, and lighting strip follows that single line, giving the interior a calm and organized feel. The shift lever has moved up to the steering column, opening up the centre console for storage and the new Driver Experience Dial. Real wood décor is included on every Atlas trim, paired with soft-touch materials, contrasting stitching, and a choice of three palettes: airy Mistral, classic Soul Black, or the all-new Garnet Red.
Comfort gains are obvious throughout the cabin. The standard 12-way ergonomic driver's seat has been revised with stronger four-way lumbar adjustment, and upper trims add thigh support along with optional four-way massage on both front seats. Captain's chairs and a panoramic sunroof remain available on the top two trims. The third row keeps its easy-access function -- second-row seats tilt and slide forward even with LATCH child seats secured -- which families using youth-sport schedules in Abbotsford will appreciate. New B-pillar vents help airflow reach the rear cabin, and second-row seat ventilation is offered on upper trims.
Power comes from the new EA888 evo5 turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder, rated at 282 horsepower. That figure is up 13 hp over the outgoing engine and is the highest output ever fitted to a production Atlas. Volkswagen anticipates better fuel economy than the previous generation, with official L/100 km figures to be released ahead of the launch. Towing capacity stays at 5,000 lbs (2,268 kg), and payload capacity is unchanged from the outgoing Atlas.
An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard, and so is Volkswagen's 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system -- a useful piece of equipment for drivers who deal with wet Highway 1 commutes, mountain weekends, or trips into the Cascades. The redesigned Atlas rides on the upgraded MQB evo platform, which preserves the model's third-row room and supports the new powertrain. Overall length is slightly increased over the current Atlas, while height, width, and wheelbase remain unchanged.
Technology
A free-standing infotainment screen anchors the dashboard. The base Atlas uses a 12.9-inch display, while every other trim moves up to a 15-inch screen. The 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro configurable instrument cluster is standard across the lineup. A new Driver Experience Dial in the centre console handles audio volume, drive modes, and -- on upper trims -- the Atmospheres feature that synchronizes lighting and audio. The console accommodates two phones charging at once thanks to updated Qi2 wireless pads, with up to seven USB-C ports placed throughout the cabin. The base trim adds a 9-speaker audio system, while the top two trims offer an available 14-speaker Harman Kardon premium setup.
Safety has expanded with the addition of a front centre airbag, raising total airbag count to seven. The IQ.DRIVE driver assistance suite has been refined as well. Travel Assist now allows for driver-initiated lane changes between 0 and 150 km/h while the driver keeps hands on the wheel. Front and rear Park Distance Control is now standard on every trim, including the base. The latest Park Assist Plus is added to the top trim for tighter manoeuvres in shopping centres and downtown lots.
