Under the hood, the Tiguan Turbo features a more powerful version of the four-cylinder EA888 evo5 2.0-litre TSI engine that powers the rest of the Tiguan range. In this configuration, the engine produces 268 horsepower at 5,000 rpm, representing an increase of 67 hp over other models, while torque increases from 207 pound-feet to 258 lb-ft, delivered between 2,000 and 5,200 rpm. The improved performance comes from several enhancements including a larger turbocharger that enables higher boost pressure, combined with a lower 10.5 to one compression ratio.
Internal engine improvements include stronger pistons and connecting rods, as well as a nitrided crankshaft for enhanced durability. The engine benefits from oil cooling for the pistons and variable valve lift on both intake and exhaust sides, while still using Miller-cycle technology to help improve fuel economy and running on regular gasoline. The powerplant connects to an 8-speed automatic transmission with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters and includes standard 4MOTION all-wheel drive, providing confident traction for Alberta driving conditions.
